MLA/SFE Cattle Futures

It's a fact. Price volatility is the only certainty in the Australian cattle market. Since the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) was first calculated in 1997, there has been an average 30-40% difference between the high and low price during any one year.

MLA/SFE Cattle Futures provide cattle buyers and sellers with a practical and effective means of protecting their bottom line and taking advantage of favourable cattle prices when they arise.

Further, cattle futures can be used in conjunction with other risk management tools to create flexibility in managing supply alongside price.

Important Announcement - Change to the EYCI

Effective Tuesday 3rd June 2008, Bathurst (saleyard code BAT) will cease to be included in the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI). The final Bathurst cattle sale occurs on Tuesday 27th May, 2008.

The new Central Tablelands Livestock Exchange saleyards at Carcoar (saleyard code CTL); will take the place of Bathurst in the EYCI calculation. CTLX is a combination of Bathurst, Orange and Blayney selling centres, which are all going to cease once CTLX is operational.

Bathurst currently accounts for approximately 3.75% of the total weekly yarding for EYCI eligible cattle. The vast majority of cattle previously sold at Bathurst are anticipated to be sold at the new complex, which, along with the potential of additional numbers from Orange and Blayney.. It is expected that there will be negligible impact on the EYCI.
